Which horse clippers should I buy?
Always buy the best. Cheap clippers tend to tug, pull and nip making it a very unpleasant experience for your horse and yourself.
That said there are good quality clippers at reasonable prices.
If you are doing a full clip then heavy-duty clippers are recommended for the best, easiest and quickest clip. I would recommend clippers that are in the range of 120W to 200W for a full clip.
For the head ears and other sensitive areas 30W to 50W horse clippers are recommended. Less than 30W will not be strong enough. The smaller watt clippers are quieter with less noise therefore will not traumatizing your horse and make the clipping experience more pleasant for you and your horse. Some smaller clippers are cordless making the trimming of the head and sensitive areas less stressful.
It is recommended that you should invest in two pairs of clippers, heavy-duty and lightweight as this will make clipping your horse easier and the smaller clippers can be used all year round and are extremely useful pre-show.
Other points to look for when buying your horse clippers is the size of the clippers, if your hands are small then you may find large heavy-duty clippers to be cumbersome and awkward.
Do you have mains power handy, if not then clippers with a waist battery pack may be the answer. This option is also good if your horse is a little skittish.
What is the difference between horse trimmers and horse clippers?
The easy answer to this question is that you use a horse trimmer for trimming hair and clippers are used for clipping the coats of animals, and for removing large quantities of hair.
Trimmers are much smaller to hold in the hand and have a much narrower blade. They are usually cordless and rechargeable and are perfect for trimming hair in the hard to reach places on your horse, as well as tidying the little bits you may have missed with your larger horse clippers.
They are also ideal for introducing your young or nervous horse to clipping.
Remember to oil trimmer blades just as often as clipper blades
